Bringing Buen Camino to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival on September 4 & 10 is exciting to me for all kinds of reasons.
The number one reason is that Phoebe, a talented printmaker and my dear friend of 47 years, is going to be there. I can’t wait for Phoebe to show me her Philly and for me to show her Buen Camino. I will also get to meet artist friends of hers whom I’ve only heard about but have never met.
I’m also looking forward to bringing the burnished show from Edinburgh to a new city. Performing for twenty four days in a row in Edinburgh has changed the Buen Camino considerably. The characters have deepened, their personalities are emerging in new ways, and I’m looking forward to testing all the changes out on an American crowd.
I’m also looking forward to performing on a larger stage again! My performance space at Edinburgh was literally “Tutorial Room M3” at Edinburgh University. It was 10’ x 6’ and on the same level as the audience’s chairs. Performing at the Yellow Bicycle Theatre in Philadelphia, my stage will be 17’ x 19’ and houses significantly more than four lights.
Having performed the show at venues like the Zephyr Theatre in Hollywood, which boasts an intricate lighting system, I’ve come to learn that the show benefits greatly from what the lights express to the mood of the scenes and enhance the environment of the various locations in the show. So I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from combining a bigger stage, a true lighting grid, deeper characters, and a largely east coast American audience.
I’m also anticipating enjoying the work of other performers at the festival. I learn so much from seeing how others approach telling their stories.
